Dots Expanded
Earlier in the semester students were given a design project involving dots and squares. After extensive thumbnailing each student ended up with 4 complete pieces.
Now they've been broken up into groups of 6. Within the group each student picked the best 2 of their designs and have started translating them into a photograic series.
It's awesome to see so many different solutions to the same problem.
Haha this was just an excuse to see the 2nd floor! I know what you're up to!
mmm cupcakes!

The World Around Me

"This is a collection that consists of both class and personal projects. I believe that it is important to do what you want, and my wants cannot be sufficed by school projects alone. There is a specific piece of an old man playing chess in graphite that is very dear to me because when I first moved to Sam, living in my dorm all that I unpacked was a sketchbook and some ebony pencils. Like any novice, I googled until i found a picture I liked and drew it. Before I knew it I was switching my major from education to art not ever having taken an art class in my life. For the record: the old man is the only picture in the exhibition that wasn't from life or my own photographs; so W.A.S.H students, use your own pictures! I want people to realize that being an artist is not something that you have to begin as an apprentice from an early age like the old masters. My talents and skills have much more developing to do, but it is important for me to showcase what I have accomplished. Although it is a strange feeling, like a vunerable goldfish, to have my first show in a room made of glass, it feels refreshing to have no inhibitions."

Good to Know:
Information in the SHSU Art Department is spread 2 ways:
1) by word of mouth
2) through flyers.
so if you see a Flyer READ IT!
Sounds simple, but I can't tell you how many students miss out on resume building experiences because they walk blindly through campus.

New York Art Trip
If you haven't heard about the NYC Art trip here is what you need to know:
Who: YOU! and fellow art students accompanied by Tony Shipp and Mike Henderson.
Where: To NYC
When: Oct 27-31
Why: To see art in person, new experiences, the FOOD..why not?
Total cost = $691. This is for the plane and the hotel.
You'd be staying at the St James Hotel! the placement of this hotel is amazing: it puts you within walking distance of Broadway.
I went last year and it was a BLAST! from about 9 to 3 we followed Tony and Mike around (to the Guggenheim, the MET, etc) from there on out its whatever you want to do. This year I plan on finding Mood Fabrics, hitting up the Natural History Museum, seeing Avenue Q and pigging out.
If you are interested:
Give $50 Place holder Fee to the Front office. (Checks should be made out to Tony Ship)
$641 is due Sept 21st.
Hope to see you there!

Day Two-Four
I am a little computer illiterate. Hence, why its taking me this long to get to day 2 when we are on day 4 ...yeah, haven't figured out how to post pictures on this thing yet. I'll ask my roommate tonight.
The Washies are currently working on compositions made only with dots. Specifically the ideas of Closure, Continuance, Proximity, and Similarity. They started with 40 thumbnails, and are in small group critz looking at the 4 that best represent each category(so 16 each). In groups they are helping each other recognize natural tendencies this will allow for more variety. Eventually (sept 5) they will end up with 4 finished Dot compositions.

Day One
For an ice-breaker, the students were given a newspaper and a roll of tape and were told to build a structure that could support half a concrete block. Looking around at what was built, I wondered if the structures resulted from trial and error or were influenced by existing architecture. For example, before mass communication, how many students would have used triangles if they'd never seen a pyramid? Just something to keep in mind:
